Our Curriculum for Blog Hop

So~ I still have so much planning to do! This is new for me so any suggestions would be great! I have so far not ordered Math curriculum. I am looking at Math U See and Professor B. as well as Math Mammoth. We are using Answers In Genesis History," Ancient Civilizations & the Bible" and Science, "God's Design For Life".
We are using William J Bennett's "Book of Virtues" and a free curriculum I downloaded for reading and writing. We are going to use Starfall.com's website for Phonics for the younger kids. I still have information overload, and could use any practical advice from a seasoned homeschooler!
UPS just delivered my abacus, organization thingy (for worksheet in/out), and some magnet numbers and letters.
We are also going to do some Notebooking. Not sure what subject yet...I am teaching everything except Bible, which my husband will cover before bed (to keep his own schedule pure!)
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  1. Your first year of homeschooling? How exciting!

I know it can feel overwhelming at the outset.

I use Math-U-See and love it. Previously, I used Making Math Meaningful, Saxon Math & Horizons (it took me awhile to figure out the perfect fit for our crew). I'm not familiar with the other two math curriculums you listed.

Have you seen the site - The Curriculum Choice (http://thecurriculumchoice.com/)? They could have some reviews on some of the things you listed.

My number one suggestion would be to enjoy your children and yourself!

  2. Your first year! How exciting! I loved our first year (sometimes inexperience is a good thing). I wish you the best of luck!
Hopefully the blog hop will help you fill in the gaps.

  3. Ohhhh, you are going to enjoy homeschooling so much! It's challenging, but extremely rewarding, as well.

We have a very eclectic approach. I wholeheartedly recommend Charlotte Mason. Try http://www.amblesideonline.org/ for great reading lists. We use Teaching Textbooks for math, and multiple resources for almost everything else. :-)

    Thanks for sharing!!
    Enjoy your year!

  4. Hi, I found you on the Not Back to School blog hop. Math U See has worked very well for my daughter. It includes lots of review, which is great for math. If you have any interest in classical education, I'd suggest reading The Well Trained Mind. It has some good curriculum suggestions and lists lots of great literature for the different historical time periods.

  5. We finally settled after 4 math curriculums... my fav two are Singapore Math and Horizons. We used both for my oldest (to pace him) but now we only use Singapore. I plan to use Horizons with my youngest son.

Good luck on your first year! Thanks for joining in on the NBTS Blog Hop!

  6. Congratulations on becoming homeschoolers! Don't stress so much about the planning -- you don't have to start everything at once. The one thing I heard from so many people when we first started was that the first year is tough. I don't mean to discourage you by saying that...I personally found it sort of freeing because when we had a bad day I knew that it was not my fault. The best thing we did our first year was spending a lot of time reading good books together. Actually, it's still the best thing we do. : )

    Enjoy your year!!!

P.S. We love Math U See!

  8. Try not to over stress the first year of homeschooling. You can NOT ruin your kids in one year. So, do the best you can but otherwise relax. It will be alright.

Thank you for sharing on the Blog Hop, and I pray that your school year is wonderful.

  9. Welcome to homeschooling! How exciting! Remember to Relax and Enjoy Your children! The most important thing is to knit your hearts together and to enjoy this time you have learning about God's Creation, His Unchangable Laws, His Story, etc. There will be Bad Days and Challenges along the way -- so look at the Big Picture! Have Fun Learning with your children!
