Stick With It Sunday- Not A Quitter

I haven’t had a chance to write a fitness post in the last few weeks. Don’t take that for backsliding on the workouts though!

I have been consistently working out 5-6 days a week in my blogging absence, and eating according to the Eden Diet. Which is not a diet. I have not finished the book entirely yet. I am not a Kindle reader apparently! I have the free app on my iPod, and I just can’t get into it like a real book. I do like to have my Bible on there for the moments I need to read, and don’t have the Bible on my person.

As for the Eden Diet book, I have completely changed the way I think about eating. I have never been an overeater, I just consumed more calories than I burned, and coupled with 6 pregnancies, the weight never left.

This book has me eating only when I am truly hungry, and eating smaller portions than I think I need. That is a big change from the “eat every 2.5-3 hours, no matter what your body says” mindset I had been following, to keep my metabolism up.

I don’t always eat when I first wake-up now, I wait for my God-given clues to tell me when I need to eat. I drink water when I first feel hungry, and wait and see what happens. Then I eat if the hunger is still there. I eat small portions of whatever I want, when I am truly hungry.

You might think that would lead to extravagant foods with lots of chocolate and sugar. It hasn’t. I find myself more times than not reaching for a second bowl of oatmeal and peanut butter in the evening when I am hungry. I don’t even think about food anymore. I am really not a fan of much food. Rick says I am a taster. Have you ever watched Ratatouille? There is the scene where Remy remarks to the food critic Ego that he is too thin. Ego responds, "I don't like food - I love it! And if I don't love it, I don't swallow." I am not that extreme, but I eat food that tastes GOOD! I am a taster. I am picky. I am a picker, looker, inspector of food.

I have listened to my bodies cues. If I am craving a loaded baked potato, I go with it. I assume my body needs the potassium and sodium. If I want Cheddar Cheese pretzel bits, I eat them. And last night we made buttermilk fried chicken, potato salad, and from-scratch buttermilk biscuits. I didn’t eat much at all, but I ate.

I also decided that even though I HATE IT, I cannot quit running. I haven’t ran for one month and 10 days. I have been doing ChaLean Extreme, and Turbo Fire. I recently added Six Week 6 Pack from Jillian Michaels.

They are all really tough workouts.

Nothing has challenged me like running did.

It isn’t the cardio aspect of it, I am fine with that. It just isn’t enjoyable for me. I don’t look forward to it.

I decided yesterday that that was not an excuse. So today, I ran.

The last Couch to 5K I did was 20 minutes straight. Or was it 25? Anyway, I took it back a notch and set up the 10 minute run/3 minute walk/10 minute run. When I approached the 10 minute mark however, I decided to man up and keep going. I ran for 23 minutes, and walked the 5 minute warm-up and 5 minute cool-down.

Almost to a 5K. I don’t know if the 30 minute run will do it, or if I need to increase my speed when I finish with the time increases. I’ll let you know. Right now I run between 5.0 and 5.3. Today I ran 5.0.

Did I hear you say your life would not be complete without sweaty proof of my hard work??

Since you asked so nicely, I will share!

I worked out 6 days this week. 3 weight training with ChaLean Extreme, 3 6 Week Six Pack with Jillian, and today’s run.

How have you been progressing?

  1. I'm not a big eater, but more of a snacker. My husband always gets on to me as he feels it's not healthy, but I'm the one with the advanced physiological chemistry under my belt :). I always eat breakfast- usually Total Raisin Bran since it's fortified with vitamins that I need, but I don't really believe in vitamin pills (poor absorption). I make my kids lunch, but rarely eat it myself unless it's Sunday and we're at my mom's. Usually I end up eating around 2 when I get little kids down for a nap. My favorite is cheese and crackers! If I'm out of cheese I may go for peanut butter and crackers. I make a healthy dinner for my family and eat a very small portion- mainly because I'm not a big fan of dinner- meat and all. Then later in the evening I snack on more cheese and crackers or popcorn or something and I always have a cup of hot cocoa and multiple cups of hot herb tea throughout the day. I love sleepytime vanilla.

My exercising has been a different story. I've lost all my pregnancy weight and I'm in a size 4 again, but I haven't been running consistently. I mainly walk and also do lots of crunches.

Thanks for sharing. It's great to keep one another accountable!

  3. Good Morning Samantha!! Congratulations on doing so great with your workouts! I need to get myself into gear and you are providing me with much need inspiration. We have a brand new treadmill (still wrapped in the plastic) that we purchased nearly 3 years ago....I guess it's about time we set that baby up and get to working out! :)

  5. After 4 kids in close succession, I was sitting a lot and feeling poorly. I went on the low fat high fiber diet this spring and lost 20 lbs, dropping from a size 12-14 down to an 8, working out 4-5 times a week. But it was so hard, I think I cried every week, I was allowed a free day, but the guilt I would put myself through eating the "wrong foods" was a struggle for me. I was strict and determined but I didn't like how I felt emotionally. I slacked for almost 2 months at the end of summer, I wanted to get back on track, but had so many rules in my head, I was failing before I could even begin. I heard of The Eden Diet from you recently, (I homeschool and pop by once in awhile to get some of your ideas) and just received it as an early Christmas gift. I am so excited by the truths in that book. I want to be my healthiest but not depressed and obsessed by food all the time, and she writes it so plainly. I feel freer already. Now I can relax a little going into Christmas, I am back to exercising regularly and feeling the best I have in so many years. Thanks for your encouraging site, I really admire how far you have come.
