It’s a new week for the Not So Back To School Blog Hop! I really enjoy seeing inside everyone’s homeschool world!
This week we take a look at our schedules. Last year, and the start of this year, we tried an hourly schedule. It didn’t work. I am not a morning person, and neither are my kids, so using a timed schedule was a horrible idea. Now we are going by a “What’s next” kind of schedule. Anyway, here is our schedule, for now. I will change anything that isn’t working as we go this year.
AM: Get up and make bed, hopefully around 8. Eat. A cinnamon roll would be nice! I try to get all of my daily Bible reading in while the kids are still asleep.
We used to do Bible and History first, but I think our brains move slower than that, so the new class schedule goes like this:
Calendar, Bible, Grammar and Writing. (Little ones will have something to keep them busy, ie. blocks, play-doh…)
Science or Geography
Unit Study, loving Download N Go!
Clean-up and Lunch
PM:
History and Handwriting/ Typing
Math
Book of Virtues, Latin, Sign Language or Art (Each of these get one school day a week).
Reading and Preschool, I just got in the McGuffey set from Amazon.
“Zone Clean-up”. The girls get Living Room and Breakfast Room (extra classroom) and the boys get the hallway and Dining Room (main classroom). To be honest, this is the most difficult for me. I am not good at keeping the kids on task for chores. I have to do better at this and realize I am not going to be able to do it all. The older 2 also have a couple of extra chores that they are responsible for.
Then I would get to housework and dinner and the kids would be free.
5:30 Dinner
7:00 Workout time.
Family time and baths happen in the evening. The kids go to bed around 9:30, mom holds on to quiet adult time until I pass out, usually on the couch.
Go check out other mom’s days at Heart of the Matter, it’s a lot of fun!
Sounds like a full day!
ReplyDeleteThe cinnamon rolls look really yummy!
ReplyDeleteWe are more of a what's next family too.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Dawn
I LOVE the school pictures,Sage looks so precious, they all look so great like it cost a lot of $$$ to have taken.I enjoyed your post about New Orleans, homeschoolers do have it made. That is what I call a field trip!!!!!
ReplyDeleteBlessings~
We just started with Getty-Dubay - it's our 5th handwriting program! So far, it is going well. How do you like it?
ReplyDeleteIt sounds heavenly! I remember the days when my schedule was a lot like this. Now I have 2 high schoolers~ let's just say I'm much busier now. :o)
ReplyDeleteSounds like a good plan! The most important thing about a plan, in my opinion, is finding one that works for YOU.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog!
I'm interested in how you like Writing with Ease. I'm looking for something for my 3rd grader. What ages do you use it for? Do you like it?
ReplyDeleteAs far as your "zone clean ups", we do something similar before every meal and I don't put food on the table until they are done. This means if one room was really messy, the others end up pitching in once they are done with their own rooms so they can eat. It builds unity and it gets the work done. So, don't nag. Just do a "zone check" before everyone goes and plays and their play time with be delayed until it's all done. Of course, with little ones redirection is always time consuming. =)
I need to look at the details more of the program, but it looked interesting. Definitely Charlotte Mason philosophy. I have an advanced reader in 3rd grade, but we haven't done a lot with the technical narration or writing. He can recall every detail of every story, so I'm working on having him tell a summary in complete sentences. He writes books all the time on his own, so working on the narration before we get stuff on paper is my goal. This looks like it would be a good fit for us. Thanks for getting back with me!
ReplyDeleteWe tried a timed schedule too. I think it worked for about 1/2 a day =) Like you we work better under the 'what's next' kind of schedule. Thanks for sharing a peek into your day!
ReplyDeleteSounds like your schedule works well for you...we have used Getty & Dubay's Italics and Teaching Textbooks, too. Love the cinnamon rolls...a delicious way to start the day.
ReplyDeleteFunny...we call our clean up times "Sweeps"..."Let's do a clean sweep." And with a family of 9, we do a few of these every day above and beyond chores...little messes sure do multiple with 18 hands (22 if you include the parents) to make them. ;-)
Blessings this year ~
Finally, someone like me! We are definetly not morning people and it's a definetly what's next kinda attitude around here. Now, I feel much better. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI find it encouraging and helpful to see how other moms organize their time--thank you!
ReplyDeleteI fall asleep on the couch every night too:) What is that? I may be up at 8 for a cinnamon roll ;)
Great schedule! Happy Homeschooling!
