Big IQ Kids is an interactive, online learning website designed for grades K-12.
You will find:
- Spelling
- Vocabulary
- Math Fact Mastery
- U.S. Geography
Big IQ Kids offers both free and premium programs.
While the site is mainly for all grade levels, there is also a spelling and vocabulary section that is geared to 3rd grade and above in the premium section, as well as a junior spelling option. For the sake of space and information, I have decided to focus on the spelling part of the program.
Once in the spelling portion of the premium section, you can choose between creating your own word list, allowing your child to make a list, or you can let the website choose a list by grade level.
After your child accesses their list, they can look at each word by itself. The audio icon then presents the word audibly as well as within a sentence. The word’s definition, as well as a synonym and antonym are also listed. The word list can also be printed or emailed.
I like how the program walks you through the learning of the word, reinforcing it before you have to remember it on your own. Your child has visual and audible learning, as well as being prompted to type in the word on their own.
The next thing we did was a word scramble, where a game was earned with tokens, with three pages of games to choose from.
I really like the way the site is laid out. The navigation is simple, and easy. There is a free version, and also a premium option. There is also spelling available in the free membership, you don’t have as many options as with the premium option, however.
Pros:
- The program can be free.
- Easy to navigate.
- Game rewards for lessons completed.
- Website full of learning.
- Spelling can be tailored to your personal lists.
Cons:
- I would love a different voice that was less robotic.
- For us, we just don’t seem to take advantage of online programs.
The bottom line:
I liked this website more than I thought I would. If you are a family who loves online learning, you should head over to Big IQ Kids and set up your account.
