Finding Frugal- Food Snob

I guess I need to admit it. There isn’t any getting over it. I am a food snob.

The more I work on this frugal thing, the more I realize I don’t like most store brands. I know that most of you super frugal folks are cringing. I’m sorry. I do have a logical reasoning that makes my food snobbery okay with me.

Humor me?

In all of my efforts to buy the cheapest I can possibly buy, I started moving to the store brands-pretty much across the board. Every aisle was off brand. Nothing was safe.

I had a few problems though-

  1. I didn’t see much savings at the checkout.
  2. If I didn’t like what I was eating I found myself stuffing meat in the freezer-never to return.
  3. I begged to eat out.
  4. I got in a menu rut. Nothing tasted good anyway-so why bother making a menu?

So, if I wasn’t saving money, but spending more-how was this helping?

In a nice pep talk {with myself} at the store the last few weeks, I decided the price difference of brands was nowhere near what I was wasting on off brands I detest. So I bought my brands.

It. felt. good.

My biggest splurges?

Amish chicken that requires no trimming and is ready right out of the package. It has to be $2-3 more a pound when it isn’t on sale, but I don’t like playing with chicken. The mere thought of it makes me want to gag. Besides, this chicken honestly tastes better.

I have a highly refined palette.

Land O’Lakes butter. Divine stuff. Walmart butter looks like water when melted. Land O’Lakes looks like-butter. I try to use it wisely, smiling all the while. My cookies taste leagues better.

My menu gets planned, the list is followed. We are saving a little money.

We only went out to eat once when out of town for the day. We all shared plates and saved a ton at Chili’s.

I may not be following all of the rules, but I am making this frugal thing work for me.

Is there a rebel inside you as well? I’d love to hear!
