Math-U-See–First Thoughts

So we took the plunge last week and bought 5 levels of Math-U-See last week. We are NOT strong Math people here, especially mom. Even though Dad is better, and works from home DOES NOT mean he is available to tutor.

When we began having trouble with Teaching Textbooks I started to hyperventilate a little. I can’t teach what I don’t know, so if TT didn’t work-what would??

Enter everyone telling me how much they love MUS. Whatever. I gave it a short stint when we first started homeschooling, and sold it. Why do I do that??

It didn’t work before because we were on a very limited budget and put everyone in the same level. Shame on me. This time I had the advantage of Uncle Sam. Thank you Sam. I wish you could last all year!

The ginormous heavy box arrived 3 days later. I stressed about storage for the blocks for 2 days and eventually ordered the spiffy box for crafts from the Container Store. I spent the weekend tearing out several weeks of worksheets out of each level, putting them in binders and getting several sheet protectors in each for re-use. That’s right I am going to re-use those puppies! They aren’t cheap you know!

That evening they came Emma wanted to watch her show. She did. Twice. Noah watched his once.

Day one

Today I started the actual lessons with Evan, in Primer. He will be in Kindergarten this Fall.

He loved it!

I also used the moment to teach him to do circles counter-clockwise to help with the writing he will be doing.

The rest of the bunch have a little bit of a learning curve, as they have learned Math one way, and MUS is completely different.

Day Two

No enthusiasm from our oldest, but when we got down to business he actually got it!!! And to top it all off- so did Mom!!!

I had pretty much given up on me and fractions. This was super great!

As for the rest of the kids, the transition was even easier today.

Today will be our last lesson with MUS for the week. We have a short week in school due to two special ladies birthdays, so I will update again about how it is going. Happy Birthday Hannah (11) and Leah (3)!!!!!

  1. So glad that it is working well for you! I am actually tempted to start my youngest little guy with MUS, and see how it goes. Also, sometimes in a pinch, we will go online to mathtv.com. There are video tutorials for many levels, so you might find that helpful if you ever just need to hear something explained in a different way...sometimes that is all it takes!

  2. Sam,

I am so happy to hear that Math U See is working out for you. How wonderful. Isn't it nice when you make the big switch and the kids actually get concepts for the first time! I love that. Happy Math Day, and Happy Birthday to the kids.
