February 3in30 Week 1

My goals for February are:

1. Finish filling out and using home management binder.

2. Drink 6-8 glasses of water a day, and take my vitamins.

3. Live more simply.

We are 3 days into February, and I think my progress is good!

1. I already printed and put together my binder, I also blogged about it. I realized one day in I was not liking how many things I had in it, or the bulky binder.

So, I simplified. Enter household notebook.

I had to print off all new pages, since mine were three hole punched. I printed them on heavier paper, for longevity. I left out the school and finance pages. The binder is fine for me for the school stuff, and I already have a system that works for me for the bills.

Staples only had a choice of black or blue. I chose black. This cover is fun for me, the first name of my blog was Sam’s Noggin. Then homeschooling hit us. I guess it could have stayed, but I felt like “my” blog became more “us”.

DSCN0077

I chose a pastel blue to keep the bold 3in30 goal list from showing through too much.

My goals page, thanks!

Monthly calendar. What? Don’t all calendars start with December???

I realized my mistake in the car. I must have put the stack in upside down when I rushed off to Staples. At least I only planned 6 month’s worth of daily schedules….

DSCN0082

I did keep these two from the last setup.

DSCN0083

Hopefully I won’t be behind on cards this year!

DSCN0084

Thanks Hope, for the link to this page. It will come in handy! This begins my cooking section, which is not long.

DSCN0085

Quick cheat guide that will keep me lugging out the monster cookbook when I pull my freezer meals out.

DSCN0086

This page is to fill in new recipes to add to my month long cooking schedule. I hope to add many more freezer cooking favorites!

DSCN0087

Weekly chore cheat sheet. My goal is one crazy cleaning day every Friday, and just touch-ups through the week. To me, there is nothing better than a top to bottom clean house, even if it doesn’t last all week!

DSCN0088

I think this idea is so neat! This came from a download I bought from LifeasMom.com. I have a spot in the daily routine for the kids to do these 5 things, once in the morning and once in the evening. We are still keeping up with the chore list from January as well.

DSCN0032

The rest of my notebook consists of 6 months worth of daily pages. I wanted it to be daily, but not too thick. I also figured if I change my mind about anything I am only committed to six months.

This cost me 4 bucks and change yesterday. They were having some kind of customer appreciation thing and they gave me a 1 inch binder, zippered pouch with office supplies, filler paper, a handful of nifty paperclips and pushpins. I consider the notebook free for all of that!

2. I have not made it to the water goal, that is a lot of water for me! I have gone from a glass of water during my workout to 4-5 glasses. I will go from there. I have missed my vitamins one day.

I know I have been drinking well however, because I have to tinkle. A lot.

3. I am continuing to read through Organized Simplicity. Tonight we will begin a 10 journey to have less stuff by doing a quick purge of the house.

We will go together into each room with new eyes and pull the easy to grab stuff we doOrganized-Simplicity-cover-226x300n’t love and put it in either a Goodwill or yard sale box. All trash we find goes out as well. Not that we have anything laying around that needs to go in the trash…..anywho, I will keep updating what we are doing, and how it is going.

I don’t have any trouble purging. The other 7 people in my house are aliens, and they have trouble getting rid of stuff.

I really thought as Type A as I am , I would at least get one kid who turned out like me. So far, not so good.

How are your 3in30 goals coming along?

  1. This looks great!!! I love the idea of a spiral too (much more than a binder)...I love spiral notebooks!!! I just worry about my needs changing after getting it all put together!! I'm eager to see how it works for you!!! 6 months is a good game plan though!!Great job!!
And oh yes- you know you're in the right direction on the water if you're tinkling more!!!

  2. Sam

So you printed your own pages nad took it to staples for them to bind it? Question: how much did that cost?

    Just curious.

  3. Alyssa, lol it is in the post how much it costs! 4 bucks and change :)

  4. One thing you might try if binding is a concern (I did this with my old homeschool planners...) Spend a year doing it (or even less) with a binder. When you feel comfortable with it, go get it bound. But I left blank pages in it so I could add things if I needed.

  5. I love the notebook. You have several good ideas for your pages. It's great seeing what others are working on. It will give me some ideas on places that I can do better in, that I might not have thought of other wise.

  6. The binder that I have, combined with the index card system, really works for me! I love the spiral binding you have done! It makes me want to print a bunch and go sell 'em!

  8. I've recently found your blog and have been watching your organization journey. It cracks me up that you keep changing (well, more like "tweaking") your "system". It's something I would do. Love the spiral! Let us know how it goes!

  12. What a great list! LOVE the notebook!! My home mgmt binder has gotten too big for me too...I waffle between doing things electronically (right now I'm using a couple of apps on my iPhone) or on paper. Your notebook is making me want to switch back! The morning high five is great...I've seen that before, and I love your daily pages. Did you make them yourself or find them somewhere? I'm going to have to check out Organized Simplicity too.

  16. LOVE the notebook. I may have to take a trip over the lifeasamom.com, even though I'm not a mom =) Good job on the water goal as well. It is a hard one to work up to because of that whole bathroom thing =) Keep up the good work!

  21. I LOVE it!!! And, I am very impressed (although your backwards pages made me laugh!). I love, love, love paper, but I'm really trying to keep most of my planning stuff on my computer/Blackberry. I may *need* to do something like this soon, though :-). I've also been thinking about the once a month cooking thing, but my freezer is rather small.

  22. Wow!!! You are so organized! I, like you, would have thought that with my love of order, that at least someone in my home would have the same wiring, but...no! :)

    I LOVE your book!

  23. That is a great binder. Now that I have my own binding system, I find myself binding so many things. I prefer it over a notebook. Anyway, great job on putting together something that works for you.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  25. Just getting back to you about our switch from Teaching Textbooks to Aleks.

One of my concerns about TT had always been that I had read some fairly mixed reviews on homeschoolreviews.com about "gaps", as well as some mistakes in the curriculum. I only read these things after we had started with TT, so since we had already purchased it, and it seemed to be working well for us, we finished out the year with it...even planning to use it again this year. I was later working at a used book sale for our homeschool group this summer, and heard from a couple of other moms that they had really had success with ALEKS, and that since a free trial was available, it wouldn't hurt to at least check it out.

We gave it a try, and both really liked it a lot. Because of the way that it is designed (which you learn about on their website), I do not feel like there will be many learning gaps. The student can't really "move past" an area if he has not shown mastery. I love that. There is also a pie chart that is an easy way to keep tabs on progress toward the final goal. Both my son and I like to see the pie chart filling in. Another perk, is that it is self grading...the upper grades in TT are not, which was not a deal breaker, but was not a perk! ALEKS does not have the bells and whistles that TT has...it is more straight forward, but Christian doesn't seem to mind that at all. Part of the free trial is the initial assessment, which determines your placement. If you are at all interested in seeing how the program works, just have your child spend some time on ALEKS (maybe over the summer, like we did), and that will help you decide if it will be the choice for you. It is an online curriculum...no cds, textbook, etc. You just pay monthly, by semester, or by the year (I think that's what the choices are!). Hope that helps a little! Thanks for stopping by my blog! :)

  28. Wow! What a great idea to have all of your pages bound together like that... I love having things bound in a spiral notebook. I'll have to think about doing that the next time I need a personalized planner!
