Sweet Classical Shot

So reading this-

has lead us to trekking through the winding roads of Eastern Kentucky to hunt down the Rod and Staff bookstore for these-

Somehow the nice lady on the phone convinced me we were close enough to them to make the drive and be sure which level we wanted. They even have some 50% off books you can only buy in-store.

She did not warn me about the road.

When dearest husband decided windy road + book = possible puke, I pulled over.

And saw this-

The back one is hard to see, but says “woman”, the closest says “man”.

How about “neither”?

The road was still windy, the wind was really blustery, but the views got more and more beautiful.

I don’t know of many things as beautiful as the sun streaming through clouds. Heavenly.

After 1,000,000 death curves, we reached our destination-

The ladies working there were quiet, and friendly. I found several  grammar books 50% off, even though they were not for this coming year. A deal is a deal, right? The kids kept pretty quiet, except when I tried to keep Leah from running down and aisle, and tripped her instead…I was happy to be wearing a skirt today, I think I would have felt weird in pants there.

The weather changed, the winds had brought in a new system. It was colder and darker. We were being followed by locals, who I am sure would not find us stopping in the middle of the road humorous, and only got a couple shots on the way home.

I love barns with these panels. I didn’t see many through the Mennonite countryside, but I really loved this one.

In the end, not a single person puked, and we had a nice drive for our 14th wedding anniversary.

Head on over to Darcy’s and see what everyone else is shooting.

  1. Oh Samantha! How beautiful. I dream of taking countryside photos like that. We live in a prime locations for it (Carolinas).
I can imagine the peace of the "primitive".
I'm a little confused...the locals were following you?

  4. Pretty pictures, Sam! What do you think of the Rod and Staff texts? I got the sample curriculum books that I told you about....I like the style, but do they seem a little advanced for the grade level? I couldn't tell since I am looking at what my kids would be doing NEXT year!

  6. Nicki- I did take a step down, as it is advanced and we have been using a more gentle approach. I kept the 3rd for my 3rd grader, 6th will use 5th, and 9th will use 7th- which I read was really college level. HTH

  17. Love these shots. I love old building and barns. The outhouse shot reminds of me of when I got married. We got married in an old white country church and there were two white outhouses out back. Glad I stopped by here!

  23. What a great photographic story. Yeah, those "little houses" might have made me want to wait as well.

The store looks just like a local library here a few towns over.

Barn Quilts are making their way across the country but I have not seen any around here.

  24. How fun! I used several Rod and Staff books for my children 20 years ago when we used to homeschool. Now some of my grandchildren are homeschooled and they have some as well. What a treat to hear "the rest of the story." Thank you for a lovely visit.

  25. OK - I was just about to leave a comment on your Homeschool Mother's Journal Post and I took a bunny trail to this post instead.

I love, love, love your pictures! What a fun (non-puking) adventure you went on, just to get some homeschool books!!! :)

I'd have to agree with you on the "neither". Outhouses are just wrong.
